Job Description
Come for the shoes. Stay for the people.
Let’s be honest: you probably already have an opinion about the best pair of platform boots, the perfect going-out heel, or the sneaker that goes with everything. If you light up when someone asks, “Do you think these work for a wedding?”, we’d like to meet you.
Steve Madden started in 1990 with a simple idea: fashion should be bold, fast, and fun, and it shouldn’t feel out of reach. Today we’re a global footwear, handbag, and accessories brand, and our stores are where that energy comes to life. We’re now looking for a Sales Assistant to join our store team and help every customer walk out feeling a little more confident than when they walked in.
So, what will your days look like?
No two shifts are exactly the same, which is part of the fun. Here’s what you can expect:
You’ll be the face of the store. You’ll greet customers warmly, help them find what they’re looking for, and sometimes what they didn’t know they were looking for. Some people know exactly what they want. Others are shopping for a first date, a graduation, or a new job. You’ll help them all.
You’ll style, not just sell. A great sales assistant doesn’t push products. They listen, then suggest. You’ll pair shoes with bags, recommend sizes and fits, and share what’s trending, so customers leave with something they love and will wear.
You’ll keep the store looking its best. You’ll help with visual merchandising, keep displays fresh, restock shelves, and make sure every size is where it should be. A tidy, inviting store makes everyone’s day better, including yours.
You’ll run the till with care. That means handling payments, processing returns and exchanges, and wrapping up each sale with a smile. Accuracy matters, but so does making the last interaction feel as good as the first.
You’ll work as part of a team. Retail is a team sport. You’ll back up your colleagues, share ideas, celebrate sales wins together, and help out when things get busy (hello, sale season).
You’ll help us hit our goals, the human way. We have targets like any retailer, but we reach them through genuine service, not pressure. When people feel looked after, they come back.
Who we’re hoping to meet
You don’t need to have it all figured out. We care more about who you are than how long your CV is. That said, you’ll probably thrive here if:
- You enjoy talking to people and can make a stranger feel at ease within thirty seconds
- You have a good eye for style, whether that’s high fashion or your own take on everyday outfits
- You’re reliable, you show up on time, and you take pride in doing things properly
- You stay calm and cheerful when the store is packed and everyone needs something at once
- You’re comfortable being on your feet and moving around during your shift
- You’re happy working flexible hours, including weekends, evenings, and holidays
- You can communicate clearly in English. Additional languages are a big plus.
Nice to have, but not essential:
- Previous experience in retail, fashion, or customer service
- Familiarity with point-of-sale systems
- A genuine love for footwear and accessories (we won’t judge your sneaker collection)
Just starting out? Great. If you have the attitude and the curiosity, we’ll teach you the rest. Many of the best people in retail began exactly where you are now.
What’s in it for you
We want you to feel valued, not just scheduled. Here’s what we offer:
- A competitive salary with a commission or incentive structure [adjust to your package]
- Staff discount on Steve Madden products, because it would be strange if you couldn’t enjoy them too
- Proper training from day one, covering product knowledge, styling, and customer service
- Room to grow. Many of our store leaders began as sales assistants. If you want to move up, we’ll help you get there.
- A friendly, energetic team that actually likes working together
- A brand you can be proud of, one that’s known worldwide and always has something new going on
- [Add any additional benefits: medical insurance, annual flights, transport allowance, accommodation, etc.]
What makes our team different
We’re a mix of personalities, backgrounds, and styles, and we think that’s our strength. Some of us are early birds, some live for the evening shift. Some of us are sneaker people, some are heel people, and the debate never ends.
What we share is simple: we care about the people who walk through our doors, and we care about each other. You’ll be trusted with responsibility, encouraged to share ideas, and recognized when you do something great. We’d rather you be yourself than a polished version of what you think we want.
How to apply
Ready to join us? Here’s what to do:
- Send us your CV to [email address] or apply through [link]
- Add a short note about why you’d like to work at Steve Madden. It doesn’t need to be formal. Just be you.
- We’ll get in touch within [X working days] to arrange a quick chat
- Meet the team. You’ll come to the store, say hello, and see if it feels right for both of us.
Please include “Sales Assistant – [Store Location]” in the subject line.
A final word
If you’re someone who notices a great pair of shoes from across the room, who enjoys making people feel good about themselves, and who wants a job that’s lively, social, and never boring, this could be a great fit.
Steve Madden is an equal opportunity employer. We welcome applications from everyone, regardless of background, and we’re committed to building an inclusive and respectful workplace.
Come and step into something new. We’d love to meet you.
